Home Base is Heaps Decent’s flagship program offering free professional music production sessions every week for young people aged 15-25. No prior experience needed – just bring your story and we’ll help you tell it through music.

Every week, we open up our state-of-the-art studio at the City of Sydney Creative Studios on Bathurst Street, providing young emerging artists with access to professional equipment, hands-on guidance from working musicians, and a safe, inclusive environment to create. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to develop your sound, our experienced mentors work one-on-one with participants to explore songwriting, music production, recording, and all aspects of developing as an artist.

Home Base is designed to break down barriers in music access, particularly supporting marginalised young people including those who are culturally and linguistically diverse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, young people living with disability, and LGBTQI+ community members.

The program has been running for over a decade and has become a vital creative hub where participants collaborate, learn new skills, and develop their artistic voice. Many of our emerging artists have gone on to release tracks, perform at local events, and build sustainable music careers. Home Base participants have performed at venues across Sydney and their music regularly features on FBi Radio and SYN Media.

Sessions are completely free but require registration via our booking link due to high demand – we’re often booked out weeks in advance. We provide all equipment, software, and support needed to help young people create high-quality original music and develop technical skills in a supportive community environment.

Home Base connects to Heaps Decent’s broader work supporting young people in youth justice centres, refuges, and community settings, providing a long-term creative space for participants to continue their artistic development when they’re back in the community.
