Bursting with colour, rhythm and joy, this uplifting performance celebrates a cultural legacy that continues to inspire new generations.

Artist statement

Disco Never Dies is a vibrant celebration of disco culture, waacking dance styles and the communities that found freedom on the dancefloor. Combining dance, live vocals, DJ performance and archival visuals, the work explores how disco became more than music. It became a space for self-expression, belonging and liberation. Through personal stories, the performance reflects on the impact disco and waacking had on LGBTIQA+ communities, women and culturally diverse artists, while paying tribute to the pioneers who shaped the culture. 

At its heart, the work is a love letter to disco, waacking and the communities that found freedom, family and joy on the dance floor and continues to pass that spirit on to future generations. Honouring the past while celebrating the present, Disco Never Dies culminates in a shared dancefloor experience that invites audiences to join the celebration.

• 24 October from 11.30am to 1pm 

• 25 October from 2.30pm to 4pm

This performance includes loud music, flashing lights and theatrical haze. It explores themes of LGBTIQA+ and women’s liberation, identity and sexuality, with brief references to discrimination and trauma. Some moments contain mature or suggestive themes. The overall work is celebratory, joyful and uplifting.

Dancekool is one of Sydney’s pioneering street dance organisations, championing hip hop and street dance culture since 2000. For more than 25 years, Dancekool has brought together diverse artists, communities and audiences through dance, performance, dance battles and cultural events. Their work celebrates identity, creativity and connection, creating safe spaces where street dance culture and powerful stories come together.
