Cherish by Mat Pal

Inspired by personal memories and the rich history of Oxford Street, Cherish celebrates the venues, people and experiences that have helped define Sydney's LGBTQIA+ community.

Drawing on art deco aesthetics, nightlife culture and shared memories, the artwork transforms the street into a vibrant tribute to connection, resilience and pride. It is both a celebration of the past and an invitation to honour the communities that continue to shape the precinct today.

Artist statement:

Cherish reflects on Mat Pal's longstanding connection to Oxford Street and the community, belonging and sense of possibility he found there.  

Inspired by the art deco design of The Albury, the work uses a custom geometric font to honour the venues, people and shared experiences that have shaped LGBTIQA+ life along the strip. The resulting patterns evoke stained glass, disco floors and quilts, referencing both the dancefloor as a place of gathering and celebration, and those lost to HIV/AIDS. 

While many of these iconic places have changed or disappeared over time, Cherish celebrates the memories they hold and the enduring strength of a community that continues to create new spaces for connection, expression and pride. 

Artist bio:

Mat Pal is a Sydney-based artist who has spent a great deal of time on Oxford Street. He has completed illustrations for publications, ACON and the Ministry of Health for NSW.
