Combat racism and support First Nations communities

When

Monday 3 June from 10am to 12pm

As part of Reconciliation Week, Now More Than ever – a call to fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, join us for an insightful conversation facilitated by Dr Georgia Durmush a proud Aboriginal, Wailwan and Gomeroi woman, mother, researcher and academic.

Guest speaker: Dr Georgia Durmush is a Senior lecturer in Sociology and Youth Work in the School of Social Sciences at Western Sydney University. She has a PhD in Indigenous youth wellbeing in higher education and is passionate about social justice and seeing Indigenous youth thrive in wellbeing, culture, education and employment.

By the end of the 2-hour conversation, you will:

  • understand the historical and cultural context of racism in Australia

  • be aware of the impact racism and colonisation has on First Nations peoples health and wellbeing

  • unpack white privilege and understand how it operates to exclude First Nations people

  • strategize on ways to eliminate racism to keep First Nations individuals and communities safe

The session will be a combination of presentation, short videos, and will end with a yarning circle discussion for participants to reflect. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and gain valuable insights into combating racism.
