Bees have an important role to play in maintaining the biodiversity of our ecosystem. More than 70% of the food humans eat each day depends on the pollination process of Bees. 

The Bower’s Make Your Own Native Beehive course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to construct a hive for native bees using reclaimed and repurposed materials.

Participants will be taught how to use a variety of accessible tools proficiently and safely. They will learn about the importance of using the correct materials, fixings and finishes and what is best suited to our native bees.

This course will take place over 2 x 3-hour sessions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this short course you will:

  • Have knowledge of general safety practices in a workshop setting

  • Understand the benefits of using second-hand timber and the different types available

  • Understand how the skills you learn in this workshop can be applied to other projects

  • Have some basic knowledge of different bee habitats

  • Understand how to correctly mark out and work to a plan

  • Have guided, hands-on experience using a drill, driver, jigsaw, handsaw and circular saw

  • A small beehive suitable for native bee species to take home and the fixings and knowledge to install correctly

Skill Level

This course is suitable for beginners (18 years and over) with no prior woodwork experience.

Accessibility

The Bower’s instructors are experienced at facilitating courses for individuals living with disability. Please let us know about any special requirements prior to enrolment so that our staff can prepare in advance.

Tools and Materials

All tools and materials relating to the project will be provided by The Bower, however we do ask that participants ensure that long hair is tied back, and appropriate footwear (closed shoes) is worn.

Please bring along the following PPE:

  • Facemask

  • Safety googles/glasses

  • Earmuffs or earplugs

107 Redfern St, Redfern NSW 2016 (entry via Turner Street, opposite of 23 Turner Street, from the rear of building)

Entrance to workshop

Workshop entrance is via Turner Street at the rear of 107 Redfern St. If the doorway is locked and/or unattended pls ring the doorbell on the left of the roller door.

Transportation and parking

Bower Woodworks is located within 5-minute walking distance of Redfern Train Station. Both metred and unmetered parking are available nearby.
