An ambitious all-Haydn all-period instruments* program.

Violinist-impresario Peter Salomon was the guardian angel/shrewd businessman who put Haydn on a boat to London, making him an incredibly successful superstar. Now you can hear why.

English audiences went wild, symphonies poured out, sterling poured in. London made Haydn famous and represented a genuine sea change in musical history: the fans were music lovers, not diversion-seeking aristocrats.

They were all ravenous to listen again at home, so Salomon added a by-line in chamber arrangements for private concerts.

AHE is well known for its thrilling performances of these versions. A long way from pale imitations: newly imagined, they are a clever, refreshing and often revelatory take.

A fresh, exciting and thrilling way to be part of this amazing music.

*A period instrument is one that is set up as it would have been at the time the music was written – this often means strings made of gut, different bows, no chin rests, and a lot of other details, small and large. The end result is a wonderful sound – as close as we know to the sound-world the composers themselves knew and loved.

Program:

  • Symphony No. 92 in G major Oxford arr. Salomon

  • Symphony No. 95 in C minor arr. Salomon

  • Symphony No. 103 in E flat major Drumroll arr. Salomon
