Foundations of Oil Paints

Often not quite as tricky as people think, oils are a beautiful, buttery medium that is incredibly fun to create with. They do require patience and attention, and if you’ve attended the previous three classes in the series, you will be well-primed for creating with oils. We will learn how to create a painting from a limited palette, which will help give an understanding of colour theory and teach you how to subtly shift the colours for more accuracy. We will learn about brushstrokes and allowing the underpainting to shine through for an added effect.

About the teacher

Gold Coast artist Natalie Popovski has rapidly gained recognition since her debut at Sofa Gallery in 2018. Her practice, which began with watercolours, has evolved to include oil paintings and ceramics. Popovski’s recent work explores female intuition through floral representations, infusing orchids, roses, and lilies with an ethereal quality that reflects inner knowledge.

In 2022, she showcased her solo exhibition Absorption at the Tweed Regional Gallery and was a finalist in the National Emerging Art Prize and the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize. Her awards include finalist spots in the 2023 Ravenswood Art Prize and the Small Works Art Prize. Popovski's work has been featured in group shows across Queensland and New South Wales, marking her as a significant emerging talent in the Australian art scene.
