Words on Art and Life with Bindu Narula

Don’t miss Binda Narula as she shares insights into her creative world, where art forms overlap and intertwine, and expression finds its way, as it has in her family for generations.

The amazing Bindu Narula will commence the evening with a dance invocation to the Muse of Art, Goddess Saraswati. Bindu comes from a family of renowned exponents of the classical dance form known as Kathak. Trained by her aunts, Guru Dr Maya Rao and Guru Chitra Venugopal, she customarily begins a workshop or lecture to honour them in this way.

A Kathaka, or storyteller, Bindu Narula follows the ancestral path of her bloodline women, who once were keepers of the Wisdom of Shakti, the Divine Feminine. In their tradition, storytellers weave together writing, dance, song, and poetry to convey the tenets of an ancient wisdom going back six thousand years. Her ancestors integrated art into the fabric of everyday life.

Over the past decade, Bindu has studied at the Australian Writers’ Centre. She was selected for the ‘Advance Memoir Writing Residency’ at Varuna House in November 2020, and ‘Writing True Stories’ at the Faber Academy in 2021. When prose fails to capture the depth of reverence for the Divine Feminine, she turns to poetry.

Currently preparing a hybrid memoir for publication, Bindu outlines how a search for pieces of her life fragmented by childhood trauma shapeshifts into a quest to revive the forgotten and erased Wisdom of the Feminine, that her ancestors lived by. The book is a deeply personal exploration of how truth telling can redefine identity and heal intergenerational trauma.
