The exhibited body of work by Tim Disher is primarily an exploration of painterly form and visual qualities with images derived from landscape design elements. They were conceived as a set of beautifully intimate paintings that would be joyful to the eye.
Begun in the 6 months prior to the pandemic and developed during the enforced studio time of 2020-2021, each image represents related visual qualities. Most of the paintings are icon designs based on experience of country and later the immediacy of gardens and plants that are culturally specific. Many of the images are instantly recognisable and variations of formal qualities create visual interest and a place for the imagination to respond.
Contrasts of colour, surface and form increase visual interest across the walls of the gallery. This body of work has been created by a process of visualisation during moments of solitude and mediation on the nature of painterly representation. As a writer crafts a language of words the artist crafts a visual language that engages the audience in a process of responding both emotionally and thoughtfully to the images. Colour is used expressively in conjunction with mark making and surface variations.
Most of the images in the exhibition were created as part of a group or batch process that enabled a range of related themes where colour is used as the primary element.
