The Law for First Nations Designers

When

Monday 15 May 2023 from 10am to 11am

Calling all First Nations designers and makers to join Arts Law and Australian Design Centre for an exciting workshop covering legal tips.

The session will cover basic concepts like copyright (what rights you have in your work and why they matter), moral rights (your right to be credited and to have the integrity of your work respected), registered designs (how you can protect your designs when you plan to manufacture products), and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property or ‘ICIP’ (how to think about protecting First Nations language, knowledge, culture and heritage). There will be detailed examples, business tips and time for questions at the end.

Bookings: This is a free event developed for First Nations designers and makers, bookings essential.

The Arts Law Centre of Australia is the only national community legal centre dedicated to the arts in Australia. It provides free or low-cost legal advice to creators and has a special service ‘Artists in the Black’ dedicated to assisting First Nations creators around the country. Its work spans telephone legal advice, document reviews, advocacy on law reform issues, and legal education. Arts Law also has a huge catalogue of resources for creators—template contracts, information sheets, guides, and checklists.

The presenter, Aditya Vasudevan is a solicitor at Arts Law and regularly advises creators about copyright, contracts and other legal issues relevant to their arts practices. He previously worked in private practice across Australia and New Zealand in intellectual property, Indigenous rights and litigation. In his spare time, he is a freelance writer.

The Arts Law workshop has been made possible through support from the City of Sydney.

During your visit you can see the current exhibitions Mutukaku Ngura: Motorcar Country and Weaving matter: materials and context and browse the Object Shop.
