Sign Language Course: Introduction to Auslan 1 offers you the unique and fun experience of communicating visually using Auslan, the natural language of the Australian Deaf Community.

If you want to learn basic Sign Language in Sydney, then this course is for you.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this sign language course, taught by Deaf tutors, you should have enhanced career prospects by:

  • Use basic communication skills in Auslan

  • Use visual-gestural communication strategies

  • Identify the Deaf community

  • Find effective ways to communicate with deaf people.

It is intended that the above topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Adult education classes can vary as parts of the curriculum are adapted to suit the needs of the group.

  • The opportunity to learn through fun and informal classes

  • A good introduction to Auslan before committing to accredited courses

Intended audience

This course is designed for students looking to upskill and be introduced to the rich world of Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and deaf culture. It is open to anyone who is eager to learn and understand Auslan, regardless of their previous experience or background.

Course venue

This course is currently offered online and face-to-face. Please ensure you check the course location when you enrol.

Please note that we currently offer two types of courses - in-person and online via Zoom.

Additional information

This sign language course is a pre-requisite for Sign Language Course: Level 2.

Please note this is a 6–8 week course, not a one-day workshop.
