Once upon a time, long before streaming TV, Uber Eats, Only Fans and dating apps, there were places in Sydney where the gay community (and sort of straight bloke out on a journey of discovery…usually one or twice a week) could go to meet kindred spirits.
For those not keen on finding romance in the high visibility of pubs & boozers like the Albury, the Oxford, the Newtown and long-departed Town Hall at Balmain (where the wharfie in a not so slinky gown from Grace Bros would observe ‘it’s not the fucking Regent love), there were plenty of venues from Kings Cross (the venerable Pleasure Chest) to the wilds of Kensington. These were places where lights were tastefully low (or non-existent), conversation skills weren’t required, and some venues added to the ambience with an occasional waft of steam.
They were safe, welcoming and fortunately seldom raided by the Vice Squad. For the proprietors like Dawn O’Donnell (Croc A Dyke Dundee) they were a river of gold - cash only and low maintenance.
Join Brandon and Duncan on a trip back to a time when Sydney was steamy not only in mid summer.
Tickets are $25 and include a cocktail on arrival.
