One might say that painting a landscape is simply a shifting puzzle. Sense of Place reflects the work of Fiona Chaplin and Gail Barfod, artists that have connected with the natural world at a very personal level.
The vividness and sensitivity of their sensory impressions invites the viewer to experience the beauty, textures, rhythms and drama of the changing light that captures their unique ‘sense of place.’
This exhibition reflects Fiona Chaplin’s deep connection to coastal landscapes from Tasmania, Spain and Sydney Harbour. Through exploration, walking and sketching she explores the connection between place, memory and emotion in her artworks using intuitive mark-making and gestural strokes.
Gail Barfod explores the landscape as though she is stepping into another world, rich with atmosphere and drama, often revealing a landscape that evokes strong emotion. Her expressive brushstrokes explore spatial concepts through the emotional play of light and colour upon the painted surface.
