Cartooning is a powerful way to create and share your own stories. They can be scanned, emailed, mailed or posted online. It is a potent tool for rants and rebellion, so you can comment on the world around you. You can turn people you know into characters and comment on relationships. So often other people’s stories are told, this time, you can learn skills to tell your own. And in a safe space. You don’t need traditional drawing skills here, so let go of the “But I can’t draw” fear. Cartoon characters do not need to be realistic, in fact they often aren’t realistic at all: think Sponge Bob Square Pants, Peppa Pig, or Mickey Mouse.
In this workshop we are focusing on learning and building skills to draw expressive faces. Much of cartooning is about showing strong emotions and drama at pivotal points in a story. I’ll give you simple challenges to develop your confidence and build up skills step by step. I will provide detailed worksheets to inspire and guide you. See you there!
Note on the worksheets: A couple weeks before the workshop, I’ll send out the worksheets. Please print them out ahead of time, so you can refer to them and draw on them during the workshop.
