Saturday 18 March 2023 from 10:30am to 12pm
In Australia, 1362 of the 22,500 vascular plants species are listed as threatened at a national level and at least ten times this number by State and Territory jurisdictions.
Botanic Gardens play a vital role in better understanding endangered plants and ways to conserve them against a range of threatening processes including land clearing, introduced pests and diseases and climate change. Join Paul Nicholson and volunteer guides Ann Webber and Pam Davis to discover some of the endangered plants, from Australian and the world, in our living collection at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Discover why they are endangered and what scientists are doing to understand, protect and conserve them into the future.
This walk will conclude at Lion Gate Lodge for the opening day of our On the Edge: Species at Risk exhibition, where attendees will receive a lunch voucher to redeem at the Food with Friends Café.
This event has been organised in conjunction with On the Edge: Species at Risk exhibition. All ticket purchases support Foundation & Friends to continue our support of the Botanic Gardens.
Coming to Lion Gate Lodge in Autumn 2023, On the Edge will highlight Australian flora, fauna and habitats that are threatened by climate change, development, introduced species and other environmental issues. The exhibition will showcase a diversity of endangered and vulnerable Australian species and ecological communities. The artwork includes a wide variety of mediums such as painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, wood, and textiles. Each artwork will be accompanied by an artist's statement outlining the threat the species or environment is facing.
