NING: TRANQUILITY is a solo exhibition by Ning Chen, presented at Rochfort Gallery. Curated by Dr. Guan Wei, the exhibition brings together a selection of recent ink works that reflect on calmness, rhythm, and inner balance.

The exhibition takes place in 2026, the Lunar Year of the Horse—a year traditionally associated with vitality, movement, and strength. Ning Chen’s works engage with the animal in a quiet and open-ended way. Horses appear throughout the exhibition as recurring figures, offering viewers a visual anchor through which ideas of stillness, momentum, and composure can be sensed rather than explained.

Qualities often associated with the horse—energy, alertness, and endurance—are suggested through rhythm, balance, and repetition across the works. The exhibition offers a reflective viewing experience, inviting audiences to encounter ink painting as a contemporary visual language grounded in observation and attentiveness.

Born in Shanghai in 1957 and based in Melbourne since 1989, Ning Chen works primarily with traditional Chinese brush and ink on paper. His practice draws on long-standing techniques while remaining attentive to contemporary ways of seeing. Ink, in this context, functions as a flexible and responsive medium—capable of conveying subtle shifts in mood, space, and movement.

The exhibition will be officially opened by Jocelyn Chey AM, whose longstanding engagement with cultural dialogue provides a fitting framework for an exhibition grounded in thoughtful exchange. The exhibition opening will be on Saturday, 7 March 2026, from 1 pm to 3 pm.
