About the exhibition:

Step into My Chinatown: A Journey Through Culture and Heritage, a dynamic group art exhibition celebrating the vibrant cultural tapestry of Sydney’s Chinatown. Presented by ArtSHINE and Haymarket Alliance as part of Neon Playground 2.0, this exhibition invites artists to explore their personal connections to Chinatown, their cultural heritage, and their experiences navigating identity in an ever-evolving multicultural community.

This exhibition serves as a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, showcasing a variety of artistic expressions that reflect on Chinatown’s past, present, and future. Through this collection of works, visitors are encouraged to reflect on the experiences that make Chinatown a unique and significant part of Sydney’s cultural landscape.

Theme inspiration:

Sydney’s Chinatown is a place where cultures converge and histories intertwine. With its rich heritage, bustling food scene, and thriving community, Chinatown offers a unique environment where cultural blending fosters new experiences and stories.

In this exhibition, artists draw from personal memories, cultural rituals, family stories, and reflections on identity and belonging. Their works explore themes such as:

  • Cultural Heritage – The importance of family traditions, ancestral stories, rituals, and celebrations.

  • Chinatown as a Meeting Place – The intersection of cultures, generations, and experiences within Chinatown’s vibrant community.

  • Identity and Belonging – The dynamic relationship between personal and collective identity in multicultural spaces.

  • Future Chinatown – Reimagining Chinatown through contemporary or futuristic lenses.
