Karen Barbouttis’ exhibition Fading Existence II is centred around maritime maps from the early 1800’s used by the Dunbar captains.
Michael Rhodes, a relative of the Dunbar family offered these maps to Karen for the purpose of giving them an extended life as artwork. These maps are original, the paper fragile, complete with captains’ plots and markings. She chose to honour the flora and fauna native to the regions. Karen’s drawings are images that work to the beauty of the markings of the maps. “I am irresistibly drawn to the simplicity, immediacy, and the honesty, of the pencil line on paper,” she says.
In 2011, Karen entered her first art competition, The Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, and was announced the Winner for 2011. Since then, she participated in both solo and group exhibitions in various galleries, in both Australia and Greece, as well as group exhibitions as finalist in various art competitions.
