Art Gallery Cinema presents Focus on queer 中文 cinema – featuring a diverse selection of queer films from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the broader Chinese-speaking diaspora.

This program explores queer experiences with nuance, emotional depth and cultural specificity. Everyday conversations, family tensions, unspoken desires and quiet acts of resistance unfold not only through narrative, but also through cinematic form itself – with films traversing fiction, documentary and experimental modes.

Queer Chinese-language cinema has rarely been given prominence in dedicated programming. Presenting these voices creates space for recognition, reflection and connection – not only for LGBTQIA+ Chinese-speaking audiences, but for anyone seeking to engage with rich, complex storytelling.

From a queer fantasia starring Hong Kong superstar Maggie Cheung as a shapeshifter (Green Snake) to Wong Kar-wai’s swoony romance _Happy together _and Alice Wu’s beloved classic _Saving face _on 35mm, the season includes eight feature films spanning more than three decades.

This program is curated by the Chinese Independent Film Foundation, with support from ACMI.
