Expert Talk with Professor Jeffrey Veidlinger

Between 1918 and 1921, over 100,000 Jews were murdered in Ukraine during pogroms — ethnic riots — which blamed the Jews for the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. In hundreds of separate incidents, ordinary people robbed Jewish neighbours, burned down houses, destroyed Torah scrolls, assaulted Jews and even killed them. Largely forgotten today, these riots dominated headlines and international affairs in their time, but the warnings that they could lead to mass extermination were never heeded.

Drawing upon long-neglected archival materials, acclaimed Historian, Professor Jeffrey Veidlinger, will explore how this widespread violence and persecution created the conditions for the Holocaust.

About the expert: Jeffrey Veidlinger is Joseph Brodsky Collegiate Professor of History and Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan.
