Australian-born, Tokyo-based artist Ghoul Guy will present his exhibition, Creature Show, at Wedge Gallery, Kinokuniya Sydney.

Ghoul Guy’s work builds a mythology around his pseudo Ghoul universe. It’s informed by ancient cultures and the artifacts they leave behind, in particular the Jōmon people’s dōgu figurines; Mesopotamian stelae; and the eye idols of Tell Brak.

Creature Show exhibits two collections of work. The first, inspired by his journey to the Jōmon ruins in Aomori, Japan, features a ceramic tableau called the Third Artifact. It was produced in 2023 at ceramicist Hannah Barclay’s studio, Clay Wollongong.

The second collection, 52 acrylic paintings on canvas, were created during Ghoul Guy’s year amongst the art community of south coast New South Wales, led by prominent local artist Mikey Freedom. The canvases depict 52 anthropomorphic forms in playful geometric abstraction.

Ghoul Guy has held a solo show in Harajuku and Ogikubo, Tokyo. He is an alumni of Luis and Yuka Mendo’s Almost Perfect creative residency in Okachimachi.

He will return to Japan in March 2023, making Creature Show a rare opportunity for Sydney art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the Ghoul universe.
