Sunday 22 June from 2pm to 3:30pm
Join Heather from Dark Tales on a ramble through Callan Park to hear about the surprising and dark history of the site, from where the Callan Park story began at Garry Owen House (now the Writers Centre) we will learn about its early days and its growth into the huge sandstone Kirkbride complex that stands close-by.
We'll then head across the site to look at the newer buildings erected post the Royal Commission and hear some tales of patients who made the news, before ending up at Broughton Hall, once Sydney's leading psychiatric clinic.
Learn about:
The rampages of Frederick Legard
The murder at the piggery
The shocking conditions found in the 1948 undercover investigation and the aftermath
The man who had to fight to be declared sane
And much more
