Boomalli Artist Talks - Wanita Lowe and Nioka Lowe-Brennan

Join us in the Fountain Court at NSW Parliament for an intimate talk with contemporary Indigenous artists Wanita Lowe and Nioka Lowe-Brennan.

During the event, this mother-daughter duo will discuss Aboriginal art, culture and their artistic process. Their work is currently on display as part of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative's exhibition Restoration of Truth, on now at NSW Parliament's Reconciliation Wall.

Across the past 25 years, the Reconciliation Wall has been home to an ever-engaging program of new, beautiful and honest exhibitions that are free for all members of the community to enjoy – and it all started back in 1998, when artists from the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative became the very first Reconciliation Wall exhibitors. In honour of the 25th anniversary, the Boomalli group returns with new exhibition Restoration of Truth, which fills the Reconciliation Wall and the Parliament's broader Fountain Court exhibition space through January 2024.

Wanita Lowe: Wanita is a proud Dunghutti Biripi woman who was raised in the Riverina area and is also accepted in the Wiradjuri community.

Wanita works as a cultural arts teacher and cultural educator. She works in both traditional and contemporary practices from weaving to working with ceramics, painting, printing and exploring with ink and drawing mediums. Through her work, Wanita incorporates inspiration from her culture landscape, stories and life experiences that have altered and shaped the proud Aboriginal woman she is today. Wanita was a finalist in the 2023 Fisher’s Ghost Art Award.

Nioka Lowe-Brennan: Nioka is a proud Gomeroi/Dhunghutti/Birripi artist who is now based in Sydney. She works mainly with acrylic and mixed media but loves to explore mediums such as clay, ceramic, woodwork, and weaving.

Being raised by an artist and a poet, she was encouraged and taught to create through visual and performing arts as a way of continuing the tradition of storytelling, creatively. She’s passionate about encouraging other first nations people to do the same through workshops.

Although beginning her journey as a practicing artist in last few years Nioka has participated in many exhibitions across Sydney and the Illawarra and has done commissioned work for Art Pharmacy’s ‘Waterfront Whale Tales’ and Voices of Women’s ‘Embellishment’ writing competition.

Nioka’s primary goal as an artist is to show the world that Aboriginal art comes in all forms and is as diverse as Aboriginal people are. She hopes to continue creating well and truly into her old age as many of the people she admires in the community have.
