The concept for the 2023 Lunar New Year was inspired by the characteristics of this year’s zodiac animal, the Water Rabbit.

The Water Rabbit is gentle, soft and approachable but also fierce and persistent in its ability to adjust to different situations. This is seen as parallel to the experience of many migrant Australians, including the artist, who grew up with 2 separate cultures and adapted to live in both worlds.

In illustration, the dual nature of the Water Rabbit is depicted by 2 rabbits, one a warrior and the other gentle, featured around a unifying circle. By working together, they are ready for any adventures ahead.

This work was inspired by folk tales from Western and Asian cultures. The artist is particularly drawn to their colours, symbolism, and ways of storytelling. In celebration of the Lunar New Year, elements are included that bring good luck.
