Yarning Circle: Launching Celebrate South King St

Join us for the launch of The Yarning Knitting Circle, a unique blend of conversation and creativity set in the vibrant atmosphere of Alpha House Gallery. This event invites participants to engage in meaningful dialogue while knitting, fostering connections and understanding through shared experiences.

A yarning circle (or a dialogue) is an important process that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people use to learn from one another, build respect, and share knowledge. It is also a method that engenders the building of robust, trusting, and caring relationships between people/s.

Event Highlights:

Yarn with Tim Bishop: Engage in insightful conversations with Tim Bishop, a proud Aboriginal man from the Murrawarri Nation in Northern New South Wales. Explore the evolving identity of South King and discuss the pivotal role of culture in building connections and respect within our community.

Knit with Min Chai: Join Min for a hands-on knitting experience throughout the yarning circle. Together, we’ll weave threads of creativity and community, making space for personal expression and shared stories.

Live Music by the Splinter Orchestra: Enjoy a live performance by the Splinter Orchestra, a radically inclusive improvising orchestra known for its exploratory and collaborative approach to music. For over two decades, Splinter has been a forum for diverse musicians and sound artists, creating ephemeral soundscapes that invite audience interaction and engagement. Experience a unique sonic ecology that enhances our gathering and reflects our collective creativity.

Purpose:

The Yarning Knitting Circle aims to create a warm, welcoming environment for participants to stitch together new connections while reflecting on the essence of South King today. Through knitting and conversation, we will discuss how culture and care can enhance our sense of belonging and community.
