Wednesday 4 October from 10:30am to 12:30pm
While many Ashkenazi Jewish households begin Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) festivities with apples dipped in honey, the tables of Sephardic Jewish families are adorned with simanim – special symbolic foods such as dates, beans, leeks, beets, pumpkin, pomegranates, apple jam and a fish head – each item holding unique significance for the coming year.
Join us for a special interactive workshop giving kids aged 5 to 10 a chance to reflect on the differences and similarities in Sephardi, Mizrahi and Ashkenazi traditions for the high holidays. Kids will take part in a unique sensory experience, encouraging them to explore the sounds, tastes and feelings of the high holidays. They’ll also have the opportunity to get creative with plasticine, creating their own 3D model of a chosen symbol.
Children will leave the workshop with a stronger understanding of the concept of symbols: what they are and what they mean, having also explored and examined some of the symbols from their own lives.
$25 per child, parents enter free
Bookings are essential. Tickets include entry to the Museum as well as this interactive workshop. Each child must be accompanied by an adult guardian. Please ensure you inform us of any allergies your child might have via the booking form.
