Doors open 5:30pm Panel discussion 6pm
With housing inequality continuing to rise, what factors shape our understanding of home, ownership and belonging?
Home is more than a roof over our heads. It shapes our sense of security, identity, connection and opportunity. Yet for many Australians, secure and affordable housing is becoming increasingly out of reach.
Bringing together leading contemporary voices across housing law, policy, community leadership and advocacy, Who Deserves a Home? will explore some of the most pressing questions facing housing in Australia today.
Our expert panel will examine how experiences of home are shaped by legal, social and historical forces, including the enduring impacts of colonisation, and consider what a more just and equitable housing future could look like. Speakers include:
Alana Hunt, artist and writer
Professor Jessie Hohmann, UTS Faculty of Law
Professor Alan Morris, UTS Institute of Public Policy and Governance
Famey Williams, CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Office
Professor Carl Rhodes, Director of the UTS Ultimo Institute
Join us for a timely conversation about housing, human rights and belonging, and the role they play in building a more democratic and inclusive society, presented by the Ultimo Institute at UTS and the UTS Gallery.
The panel discussion is part of the wider public program series Who deserves a home? delivered alongside Alana Hunt’s first solo exhibition in Gadigal Nura/Sydney, To the Owner (UTS Gallery, 8 September – 18 December 2026), the program includes free film screenings, discussions and talks on the themes of property rights, housing and displacement.
