Observations and meditations, painting and drawings by Tim Disher and Julie Johnstone.
Tim Disher's current body of work explores shape colour and surface to represent the experience of country that includes central Queensland, Western Australia and his garden in Marrickville. Each picture is a studio creation developed after careful observations of many localities seen during his extensive travels.Tim uses his deep formal knowledge of the elements and principles of design to construct his images. Each picture can be read as both a literal image of place as well as imaginative compositions. In the studio Tim uses visualisation techniques when arranging the various combinations of elements.
Though a coastal dweller, Julie Johnstone has been drawn to the landscapes of the interior; to the forms, colours and textures, the light and mood of these dry, rugged, salt-bush dotted landscapes that are elemental to our history and culture. Over many years she has travelled through outback New South Wales, Central and Northern Australia. Julie’s pictures are impressions - part representational, part memory and part intuition. They are composed from fleeting visual notes and detailed observations recorded whilst driving across, walking through or simply being in the landscape. They are the landscapes of Lake Mungo and the West MacDonnell Ranges. Julie works in coloured chalk pastels, combining drawing with more painterly techniques.
