'Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested.' The arresting officers were not authorised to tell him why he was under arrest, or to detain him in any way. He just had to remember that he was under arrest.

Meeting at the Shakespeare Hotel, we will be discussing Franz Kafka's The Trial. Written in 1915, it is an exploration of personal autonomy, alienation and absurdity. The novel is Kafka's best known work, and is in Le Monde's Top 100 Novels of all time.
