In just a few short years, Tessie Overmyer has solidified her position as one of the most thrilling and dynamic saxophonists in the Australian jazz scene. Critics, fans, and fellow musicians alike have recognized her for a maturity that surpasses her years.

Since the inception of her career, Tessie has showcased her talents across Australia, performing at renowned events such as the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Perth International Jazz Festival, and the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. Her reputation as an in-demand performer is evident through her collaborations with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, participation in the supporting band for the Australian National Jazz Awards, and performances at the APRA Art Music Awards.

Tessie’s prowess as a saxophonist and composer has earned her a nomination for the esteemed Freedman Jazz Fellowship and recognition as the Sydney Improvised Music Association’s Sonic Futures artist for 2023.

Barney McAll, in praise of Tessie, notes, “Tessie has a gift that can’t be learned: a natural flow for the future and the ability to speak the poetry of life and death through her horn.”

Her latest project, set to premiere at Foundry 616 as part of the club’s Great Southern Nights program, features a stellar lineup including Steve Barry (piano), Jacques Emery (bass), Abby Constable (drums), Ray Cassar (trumpet), and James Greening (trombone).

Tessie’s compositional style is characterized by thoughtfulness and lyricism, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of composers ranging from Chopin and Sibelius to John Schofield and Philip Dizack. Through the use of lush harmonies, dynamic rhythmic ideas, and contrapuntal textures, Tessie crafts music that enthralls the listener, creating a tapestry of emotive soundscapes that seamlessly blend tradition with innovation. The result is a harmonious fusion of complexity and accessibility, providing a musical experience that resonates with both seasoned jazz enthusiasts and those new to the genre.
