The office of the lady mayoress was more than just society balls, nice frocks and elaborate flower arrangements. It was a busy role of entertaining distinguished visitors, social welfare and philanthropy.
Sydney’s newspapers frequently reported on their choice of attire, yet rarely about their individual merits. They were often successful, ambitious women in their own right, established well before they shared in the civic limelight of their mayoral husband or relative.
In this talk as part of Celebrate Sydney Town Hall, City of Sydney historian Nicole Cama will share stories about past lady mayoresses of Sydney, who navigated their public life and civic duties with style, care and dedication. Peep inside the lady mayoress rooms at Sydney Town Hall, and view photographs and paintings from the City of Sydney’s Archives and objects from the civic collection.
This is a free event open to all ages. We aim to present inclusive and accessible events. If you have any particular access or communication needs please contact Natalya Shinn, programs coordinator on 02 9265 9789 or nshinn@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.
