Steve Salo is an Australian contemporary artist renowned for his emotive portraiture and expressive landscapes. From a young age, Steve demonstrated a natural talent for painting, encouraged by his Ukrainian grandfather, whose craftsmanship instilled in him the value of dedication and respect for his art. Despite early health challenges and a varied career, a pivotal fire in his studio in 2013 refocused his commitment to painting.
Steve’s work delves deep into the human psyche, seeking to capture complex emotions rather than surface appearances. As he states, “Through the visual voice of painting, I communicate emotion. We are complex of mind and spirit; my intent as a contemporary portrait artist is to explore the human psyche through painting these complexities. I’m interested in portraying this aspect rather than focusing on the surface level alone. My landscape paintings also go beyond visual perception; I am more concerned with portraying the feelings evoked by being in a place.”
Since fully dedicating himself to painting in 2014, Steve has exhibited widely, with his works featured in prestigious Australian awards and international collections. His career includes notable residencies in Australia and Finland, and his paintings are held in private collections across the globe. With a studio he describes as "heaven," Steve continues to pursue his dream of living and thriving through his art.
