Sewing Essentials Course

Sewing Essentials is the perfect introduction for anyone who’s always wanted to learn how to sew. Whether you’re completely new to using a sewing machine or looking to refresh the basics, this hands-on course will help you build skills, confidence, and creativity in a supportive environment.

You’ll learn how to confidently use a sewing machine—including setup, troubleshooting, stitch selection, and basic maintenance—while developing practical sewing techniques such as seams, hems, pockets, and reading commercial patterns. You’ll also gain experience preparing and cutting fabric, including working with stretch fabrics, directional prints, and velvet.

As you build your skills, you’ll complete a series of beginner-friendly projects designed to help you practise what you’ve learned and create something useful and satisfying to take home. Projects include a pincushion, a lined zippered pouch, and a pair of beautiful cotton pillowcases.

Along the way, you’ll develop good sewing habits, learn industry tips and techniques, and gain the confidence to continue sewing your own projects at home.

Be warned: sewing can be wonderfully addictive!

Course content

During the course, participants will work with techniques and projects such as:

Session 1: Getting to know your machine

• Safe sewing practices

• Sewing machine components and how they work

• Machine setup and thread tension

• Cleaning and basic maintenance

• Stitch types and settings (e.g. zigzag, stitch length)

• Speed control and practice sewing on calico

Session 2: Seams and finishes

• Common seam types and their uses

• Hem finishes and when to use them

Session 3: Pockets

• Sewing a basic unlined patch pocket

• Sewing a lined patch pocket

Session 4: Patterns and cutting

• Reading and understanding commercial sewing patterns

• Pattern markings and layout

• Matching fabrics with patterns

• Cutting techniques and fabric considerations (e.g. nap, stretch, directional prints)

Sessions 5 & 6: Final projects

Participants will apply the techniques learned during the course to complete beginner-friendly projects such as:

• A pair of cotton English-style pillowcases with internal flaps

• A fully lined zippered pouch with boxed corners
