The National Indigenous Art Fair is an ethical marketplace held on Gadigal country at Warrane's (Sydney Cove) Overseas Passenger Terminal, The Rocks. The festival offers a unique opportunity to buy artworks directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from remote community-owned art centres from the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and regional and remote NSW.
Now in its fifth year, the Art Fair is an immersive weekend of Indigenous art, design, food, performances and culture.
This year there will be the opportunity to taste and learn about native bush foods while listening to the sounds of Stiff Gins and Microwave Jenny.
During the weekend there will also be a free communal weaving circle, sandpainting with artist Walangari and a special Torres Strait Islander dance workshop.
Opening the Art Fair on Saturday, Garuwa Cultural Immersion will welcome guests with a Smoking Ceremony and traditional dance, and on Sunday, for the first time the program will feature an interstate dance group, Mimih Dancers, based in the Northern Territory.
Pre-book hands-on workshops, including an Ochre painting class, to learn traditional painting techniques and history with Kunwinjku artists from Injalak Arts Centre from West Arnhem Land or a children’s workshop with Indigenous artist and storyteller Amanda Reynolds to craft their very own wearable possum armband. These can be booked at www.niaf.com.au/workshops
