Mark Maurangi Carrol (b. 1995) is a Sydney-based artist whose works explore personal histories and cultural memory. His works uncover universal subjects of desire, loneliness and identity; often drawing inspiration from childhood experiences in the Cook Islands and Australia.
Beginning on the reverse side, Carrol bleeds industrial oil enamels through the loom state linen as a tribute to his printmaking training, and a continuation of traditional Cook Islander practices of Tīvaevae, Pāreu and Tapa.
In 2023, Carrol was awarded the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, decided by guest judge Guido Maestri. He has exhibited in Australia and internationally, including at the Aotearoa Art Fair in New Zealand, and the Melbourne Art Fair. He will present a solo exhibition at the Lismore Regional Gallery later this year. Carrol is currently a finalist in the Bayside Painting Prize and the Wynne Prize.
Islands not to scale (ueata) – Act I is the first instalment of a three-part exhibition that reflects on questions of scale, movement, and representation from a diasporic Pacific perspective.
Opening reception: Friday 16 May 2025, 6pm until 8pm
