Sud is a reflection on southern Italy, particularly Puglia, the region my family comes from, and my relationship to a place that feels both familiar and distant.

CELEBRATORY DRINKS 6–8PM THURSDAY AUGUST 13

MEET THE ARTIST DRINKS 3–6PM SATURDAY AUGUST 15

The works come from travelling through towns, streets and landscapes that I recognise instinctively, despite hardly knowing them. I experience southern Italy partly as a traveller, and partly through inherited memory of family stories, rituals, food, objects and a visual language that already feels embedded in me.

My approach to painting is intuitive. The surface, scale and brushes often determine how I respond to a subject. Smaller works invite close observation and a quieter realism, while larger canvases allow for a looser, more gestural language. It often feels as though different versions of me are painting.

Puglia is sun-bleached stone, brilliant blue skies, narrow streets and generations of olive trees and fruit growing from dry earth. There’s a particular atmosphere to the south: slower, warmer and deeply sensory.

Through paintings of people, places and things, Sud explores nostalgia, belonging and the strange intimacy of returning to somewhere that has always been part of you.
