Set in sixteenth century Venice, the cunning and despotic merchant Pantalone De' Bisognosi has arranged his daughter Isabella to marry Dottore’s rich son against her will. In an act of rebellion, Isabella goes undercover to passionately pursue her true love, the handsome but less affluent Ottavio.

Meanwhile, another crisis is rocking the shores of Venice when the two servants, Arlecchino and Pulcinella, gamble their savings on a dodgy lottery ticket. Gifted with a quick wit and a bit of luck, Colombina, Isabella's maid, proves to be the only one capable of directing both sets of characters toward the ending they deserve.
