1790. The sleepy village of Algernon, midlands UK. Well-known for its artisanal crafts. Just outside town, a new, big building has arrived — a factory. With a steam engine. Who are the people running it? What does the factory make? How will it change the villagers? Who will go work for the factory and who will fight against it?
