Big solitary trees have an important place in the landscape, and our imagination. Used as markers, landmarks, meeting places, or milestones on a journey, these trees reflect the history of place – fires, storms, carved initials or symbolic scarring.

In some paintings, broken limbs lie scattered about the base of a once grand tree on a barren landscape. In others, their spare trunks reach to the sky in ecstasy. Cicada song simply vibrates.

John Walker not only paints the landscape, but the stories behind the landscape. The geography, climate and human interaction all are shown, asking us to reflect and remember our own experience.
