Renew Sydney Central Branch invites you to join us for a webinar with Professor Veena Sahajwalla from UNSW Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT) Centre.

She will discuss the 'Green ceramics' project - which transforms waste glass and textiles into beautiful and durable ‘Green ceramics’ - beautiful designer tiles, kitchen benchtop, splashback, lights and art-works.

Professor Sahajwalla will also discuss the MICROfactorieTM process which has the potential to revolutionise home construction and industry waste reduction on a global scale.

In Australia, the building industry is responsible for around 60% of the waste we generate. UNSW SMaRT Centre and Mirvac have collaborated on a new apartment 'The Pavillions' at Olympic Park, Sydney. The apartment is designed with the '"green ceramics", including beautiful kitchen benchtop, splashback, all the tiles and light fittings. This collaboration shows a better way to build, using reformed waste, which provides a second life for the mountains of glass and clothing, much of which would otherwise find its way to landfill.

The MICROfactorieTM process developed by Professor Sahajwalla and UNSW SMaRT Centre, takes problematic waste material and ‘reforms’ these into entirely new products including ‘green ceramics’. Professor Sahajwalla will discuss this process and its many other potential uses for industrial waste materials.

Speakers: Professor Veena Sahajwalla, Director of Sustainable materials Research & Technolory (SMaRT), UNSW.

Professor Veena Sahajwalla is a leading expert in the field of recycling science, and founding Director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research & Technology at UNSW, Professor Sahajwalla is producing a new generation of green materials, products and resources made entirely, or primarily, from waste. Veena also heads the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for ‘green manufacturing’ – a leading national research centre that works in collaboration with industry to ensure new science is translated into real world environmental and economic benefits. Veena has been extensively recognised for the innovation and significance of her work, including via election to be a Fellow of the esteemed Australian Academy of Science. Professor Sahajwalla was recently featured on ABC TV ‘Australian Story’ series. See ‘The Tipping Point’ here.
