Giant snakes and ladders is a fun board game and artwork that acknowledges the rich history of Chinatown designed by Sydney artist Andrew Yee.

The design explores the way the past, present and future intersect in Chinatown.

In the artwork, snakes have a contemporary aesthetic of vibrant colours and bold lines, emphasising their charming, elusive and intense traits.

The glossy red squares of the checkboard pattern are reminiscent of metal and glass, materials used in a futuristic façade for Chinatown.

You’ll see the wooden texture on the yellow squares, representing the past, as lumber was a significant good traded in Chinatown in the 1920s. It was during this time Chinatown moved from The Rocks to Haymarket, creating a huge commercial space for the Chinese diaspora.

About the artist

Andrew Yee is a multidisciplinary artist who works in illustration, video and installation. Yee's disconnection from his suburban surroundings led him to consume 2000s manga, pro wrestling, K-pop and more. These muses influenced his sense of self, leading to a visual practice offering a wild glimpse into his meditations on his identity. His work crafts imaginative narratives in an idiosyncratic, surreal and comic-inspired style.

Yee has exhibited in private and public spaces. His work was featured in the Sydney Lunar Festival banner gallery in 2022, and in 2024 he designed the Sydney Lunar Festival light rail dragon.
