The paintings in David Skinner’s exhibition represent a wide variety of subjects: places travelled to such as coastal South Australia, the NSW South Coast, Sydney Harbour, France and San Francisco as well as domestic scenes and family portraits.
As the title of the show suggests, the work in “a retrospective” spans a long period of time. The exhibition includes paintings that were started thirty years ago that have been revisited, as well as current work.
David was educated in painting and drawing at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, receiving a Diploma of Painting. Following extensive travel around Australia he continued his painting study at the South Australian School of Art and lived and painted in Adelaide for six years. In the late 1970s he was a founding member of the Round Space Gallery and group studio, the artist collective that was a significant contributor to artistic endeavour in Adelaide in the era.
Returning to Sydney in the 1980s he has continued painting as well as spending some years working in the animation industry prior to his retirement.
David’s work is represented in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide University, the National Gallery of Victoria and Griffith University.
