David is inspired by the interlace patterns found in Lao temple ornamentation and other cultures. In this series of works, they are like visual metaphors of interwoven journeys in life set against ephemeral botanical drawings.
Based in Sydney, David is a mixed media artist working predominantly with textiles collected from his travels. With a creative journey from architecture to art spanning 30 years, he finds inspiration in textiles, travels and intercultural connections. One of his go-to places of inspiration is Luang Prabang, the old capital of Laos. He recently completed an artist residency there and volunteered in the restoration of stencil work in temples.
David has exhibited in group and solo shows in Kuala Lumpur, Luang Prabang, New York, Penang, Singapore and Sydney. His approach to art is influenced by his Malaysian 'Peranakan' mixed heritage and its culture of adaptation, melding and layering. This exhibition is comprised of his own twists on traditional techniques from indigo resist dyeing to botanical drawing and stencilling.
