Are you an emerging arts worker, collector, art student—or simply passionate about art?
Following the success of last year’s session, we’re excited to bring back this two-day seminar focused on the care of art objects. Over two days, you'll develop essential skills in object handling, environmental storage, packing and transport, installation and condition reporting. Deepen your understanding of art conservation and collection management, and gain practical insights into complex registration systems to strengthen your expertise in the field.
Day 1: The Art Object in Motion
Content includes:
Introduction to constituent parts of artworks such as paintings, prints and ceramics, with museum-standard handling techniques
Hands-on practice in handling and moving objects safely
Environmental storage and maintenance, including cultural sensitivity and hazardous materials awareness
Packing and transport methods covering soft and hard packing, crates and travelling frames
Installation and supports with a focus on teamwork for exhibitions and identifying or creating supports
Insights into workplace readiness and skill development in collection management
Day 2: Examination and Reporting
Content includes:
Examination of artworks and identifying structural issues
Writing condition reports to professional standards
Pair work to examine paintings and prepare condition reports with guidance from conservation professionals
Presentation and feedback on participants’ reports
An optional talk on the conservation treatment of a historic artwork
