Colour Fun: a one day linoprinting workshop

When

Saturday 17 January from 10am to 4pm

In this one-day linoprint workshop you’ll explore the creative potential of working within a set format: using a 15 x 15cm piece of linoleum and exploring ways of working with colour. Under the expert tutelage of Maggie Stein you will learn how to make excellent, colourful prints without using a press.

During the workshop, Maggie will explain the basics of

  • making a detailed single colour print;

  • working with the colour reduction method;

  • using chine collé; and

  • using a colour roll.

You will be guided through these printmaking processes and by the end of the day, you’ll have a collection of small works ready to continue working on, frame or share. You will also learn some registration techniques, which help you get clean prints and line up the layers of colour. You will be working with Cranfield Inks, a variety of barens – including Keans ball bearing barens, Pfiell, Flexcut and Speedball carving tools and Hosho and Gampi papers.

Whatever methods you choose to explore, you will be fully supported along the way. No previous printmaking experience is required.

Morning tea and all materials are provided, so all you will need to bring are:

  • A 15 cm square photocopy or two for reference (printed in reverse if it includes text);

  • An apron (and wear clothes you don’t mind getting inky);

  • 2 x pieces of A3 board (cardboard/foamcore) or A3 bag for taking your prints home;

  • Your lunch (however there are plenty of great cafes and a supermarket nearby)

  • An open mind and a playful spirit

  • Optional: a notebook and pencil / a favourite tool.

Maggie Stein holds a degree in Visual Art, a certificate in Etching and a Diploma of Education. She has 35 years of experience teaching across all ages from infants to adults.
