Chinatown History Tour

Meet your guide, King Fong at the gates of the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour.

Starting on the steps of the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour, moving through Chinatown and into Haymarket, King will shine a light on the people and places of historic importance to Sydney's Chinese Australian community.

Depending on time you may hear stories about: 

  • Margaret Fulton's introduction to Chinese cuisine

  • The origin of the Wing On department stores

  • Pigeon-assisted lotteries 

  • The money-saving code used by merchants to send encrypted telegrams to China 

  • Dixon Street's colonial origins. 

Tickets are free and bookings are essential, the tour is limited to 20 participants

This tour is part of The Tea Exchange exhibition's public programming. A collaboration between The Chinese Garden of Friendship and MOCAThe Tea Exchange explores the history and cultural significance of tea in Australia.
