A light-hearted look at the game of cricket, as seen in the life and novels of Charles Dickens.

Not on the Hearth But Out on Pitch! is the title of a talk by Ron Worthington for the Dickens Society of NSW, concerning mentions of the game in all the novels.

A number of Dickens' characters had a close attachment to the game, none more so than the Pickwickians at Dingley Dell.

Dickens himself was a keen devotee of and participant in the game, particularly in his later years at Gad's Hill. We will look at the many humorous mentions of game and the characters who played it.
