Sun & Sea

When

Fridays, 5pm to 8:30pm Saturdays, 4:30pm to 8pm Sundays, 3:30pm to 7pm Friday 6 January 2023 to Sunday 8 January 2023

Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, this contemporary English-language opera-performance in the round, also in the sand, confronts themes of climate emergency with humour and power.

Viewed from above in a playful transformation of Sydney Town Hall, the stage is a sandy beach upon which holidaymakers sunbake and sing gentle elegies about their lives and the changes they observe in the natural world around them.

Written and created by Lithuanian artists Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė, and Lina Lapelytė, Sun & Sea is not didactic – in this apocalypse story, the world doesn’t end with a bang, but with a long, lazy afternoon whiled away at the beach.
