★ ABOUT KEYIM BA

KEYIM BA are an 8-piece West African ensemble that's as captivating as it is dynamic. Described by critics as "an Afro-Australian treasure" and "capable of holding its own on the world stage," this band delivers performances that are nothing short of sensational. With a style that blends the traditional sounds of West Africa with the pulse of reggae, funk, hip hop & roots, KEYIM BA craft an intoxicating, modern groove that fills dance floors and leaves audiences moved in a massive way that only roots music can. (Just ask anyone who saw them at the SOUL OF SYDNEY 6th Birthday that year... it was an unbelievable show that has stuck with us for years.)

Led by the charismatic Sibo Bangoura, a passionate advocate for his homeland's music, KEYIM BA invites listeners on a vibrant journey through the heart of African culture. Born into a Griot family in Conakry, Guinea, Sibo was surrounded by the traditions and magic of music from a young age. His world travels led him to Sydney, where KEYIM BA was forming by bringing together some of Australia's finest West African musicians, each contributing their unique artistry to the band’s infectious energy.

The lineup includes Sibo Bangoura* on vocals and percussion, Blair Greenberg on rhythm guitar, Calvin Welsh on drums, Johnathon Pease on lead guitar, Paula Baxter on vocals and dance, Rachel Bangoura on vocals and dance, Tina Harris on bass guitar, and Yacou M’Baye on percussion. Together, they deliver a show that celebrates the colourful, rhythmic, and joyful spirit of West Africa with a modern twist that appeals to global audiences.

With a stage presence as lively as their beats, KEYIM BA is more than a band; they’re an exhilarating experience, a true gem in the Afro-Australian music scene, and a testament to the power of cultural fusion.

Returning to SOUL OF SYDNEY again for the second time to be part of the birthday celebration.
