Artist talk: Sunday 15 March 11am

This show reflects the coming together of the various threads explored in Martin’s practice. From straight up figurative painting, through to experiments in abstract formalism, these new paintings represent a merging of past threads – where elements overlap and intertwined in a dance of colour and form, combining the real with the unreal, yet still reflective of the essential traces of Martin.

“The inspiration for the exhibition references objects about me and familiar artefacts I have collected and adored, historic and seductive, references to the natural world, juxtaposed with the male figure and portraits of friends and heroes who inspire me. All is in the service of crafting each picture its own unique pictorial narrative that aims to speak of my identity within these metaphysical constructs.

“These paintings combine elements of my reality within a wider context and thus are an infusion of my internal psyche and external gaze. Metaphysical works in that sense; representative of a timeless, other worldly pictorial space. A sort of magical reality manifest!

“My art follows in the footsteps of the Aesthetic movement. Art for art’s sake; that seeks beauty above function, but also seeks to convey something of my identity too.

“Above all these paintings reflect the optimism and the gaiety of my life. They carry traces of my past and present yet also, I hope, contain something universal to embrace for each viewer to enjoy and celebrate too.”
